Industrial Refrigeration Operators are responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of refrigeration systems in food manufacturing facilities, cold storage distribution centres, hockey and curling rinks, bulk ice production facilities and air conditioning in commercial or industrial buildings.
Your knowledge of math and physics will be paired with the mechanical and technical knowledge needed to begin a career as a Class B Refrigeration Power Engineer. You will learn how to troubleshoot issues and make repairs on a variety of equipment. Courses include: Mathematics, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Plant Services, Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Electricity and Plant Safety.
The following courses are designed for students without any previous experience in the field. Students study independently at their own pace to obtain their º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Industrial Refrigeration Operations Certificate and then must successfully pass the PEI Provincial Exam to become a licensed Class B Refrigeration Power Engineer.
Recent changes to the Prince Edward Island Power Engineer Regulation allow an applicant to write an examination for and receive a Class B Refrigeration Power Engineer License after successful completion of the º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Industrial Refrigeration Operations Certificate. No additional operation time is required.
As you acquire more qualifying experience and training, you will be able to upgrade your classification through the provincial certification process.
The Industrial Refrigeration Legislation, Standards and Safety course is the first of three (3) courses required to be completed to receive the º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Industrial Refrigeration Operator Certificate.
However, this course may be taken as a stand-alone course by those students seeking study material for Legislation, Standards and Safety as it applies to Industrial Refrigeration Operations and are not intending to complete the other two (2) courses for the º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Industrial Refrigeration Operator Certificate.

Introduction to Refrigeration Plants This module presents an in-depth description of the essential provincial acts and regulations and related codes and standards that apply to the pressure equipment field in general and to industrial refrigeration systems in particular. The material focuses on Prince Edward Island Acts and Regulations; however, federal and other provincial acts and regulations are covered as well. |

Refrigeration Plant Safety This module introduces the student to plant safety theory along with practical plant safety programs, the handling of hazardous materials, plant fire safety, fire extinguishing methods and equipment, safe refrigeration plant design and emergency response. |
The Industrial Refrigeration Fundamentals course is the second of three (3) courses required to be completed to receive the º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Industrial Refrigeration Operator Certificate.
Complete this course before starting the Industrial Refrigeration Operations course. Much of the material can be considered as prerequisites for the Industrial Refrigeration Operations course.
However, this course may be taken as a stand-alone course by those students seeking study material for the fundamental principles of Industrial Refrigeration Operations and are not intending to complete the other two (2) courses for the º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Industrial Refrigeration Operations Certificate.

Communications and Maintenance This module introduces the creation and reading of accurate engineering sketches, an overview of computerized Maintenance Management Systems, the creation and use of Standard Operating Procedures and effective written, electronic and radio communications in industrial plants. |

Welding This module presents the student with the basics of non-fusion and fusion welding equipment, materials and techniques, heat treatment of welds and non-destructive inspection techniques. |

Electricity This module introduces the basics of electricity and electric circuits, the calculation of electrical parameters and costs, understanding the risks and safe use of electricity and the design, selection and maintenance of AC and DC electric motors. |

Pumps This module presents the student with the design, application, preventive maintenance and safe operation of industrial pumps and compressors. |

Water Treatment This module focuses on the treatment of open and closed water circuits in cooling towers and refrigeration condensers and the effects of water impurities on system integrity and performance. |

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning This module focuses on the principles, operation and maintenance of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for human health and comfort in commercial and industrial settings. |

Environmental Systems This module focuses on the psychrometric properties of air and their relevance to air conditioning systems. The use of psychrometric charts, instruments and calculations are presented. The design, operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment is included. |

Lubrication This module focuses on lubrication principles, types of lubricants, and their applications in reducing friction, wear, and corrosion in machinery. |

On the Job Training After successful completion of the three courses in the Industrial Refrigeration Operations program, four (4) weeks of On the Job (OJT) training is provided in an active industrial refrigeration plant. The OJT is arranged and monitored by a º£½ÇÂÒÂ× instructor. Assignments and evaluation are an integral part of this course. Successful completion of this module is required to receive the º£½ÇÂÒÂ× Industrial Refrigeration Operator Certificate. |
